On Tim Scott and Tokenism

Yesterday I was scrolling through Instagram and I saw a post by Senator Tim Scott. When I lived in SC, he ran for U.S. Senate and I proudly voted for him. He is a very well-respected man in the Republican Party, he has worked hard to bridge divides and fight for equality, and when he speaks, people listen. Sadly, I had to read this on his Instagram:

"Not surprising the last 24 hours have seen a lot of "token" "boy" or "you're being used" in my mentions. Let me get this straight...you DON'T want the person who has faced racial profiling by police, been pulled over dozens of times, or been speaking out for YEARS drafting this?"
